Millennials and Gen X discovered the world around them through μTorrent. It was a cultural movement. The breadth of music, movies, TV series and books I stumbled upon through μTorrent is unparalleled. Researchers from the cultural anthropology domain will have an interesting case study to understand the people born between 1980 and 1990 (give and take a few years on each end of the spectrum) who got access to connect with art and music from other countries and cultures right into their homes.
The DataOne Years
I can't pinpoint a time when μTorrent picked up in India. My journey started in early 2006. By this time, we burnt our fingers with lots of viruses through LimeWire and other sus platforms. Somewhere along the way we had file sharing tools – Rapidshare, Mediafire and Megaupload. For us who started our internet surfing journey on BSNL dial-up connections in the 90's, the introduction of BSNL Broadband called DataOne gave us a new break to get access to the world outside, and it was a fascinating scheme. The DataOne plan had a billing model that counted and stacked every MB. The free download window was from 2 AM to 8 AM. All the downloads were set to start at 2:01 AM and stop at 7:59 AM.
Equal Parts Leecher and Seeder
The joy of seeing the green and red bars spike, and when the download read 100% complete. The unsaid rule was that one had to be equal parts leecher and seeder. With μTorrent, I got an opportunity to take a peek into other cultures and their perspective. I had picked up the bass guitar around this time. Barring a handful of lessons from a friend and great bass player, I am completely self-taught. I got access to numerous bass guitar tutorials and their various styles – Larry Graham, Alexis Sklarevski's The Slap Bass Program, Michael Manring and countless others. The Wire, my all-time favorite TV series, and discovering movies from filmmakers of Iran and Japan became a major influence in my life. Every day after work, I would get back to open the family computer to see how my downloads had progressed.
When the Music Stopped
My μTorrent journey paused when I started my B-school journey in 2008 – there was no time to download and watch series. A few years later, streaming platforms gave access to lots of movies, TV series and music.
μTorrent continues to exist today, even though it has changed ownership a few times. Looking back, it was an influential program in my early 20's and shaped me in ways I didn't imagine.
